Video: Leaving The Subway, In Slowmo
Video: Leaving The Subway, In Slowmo

Since no one slows down when rushing out of the subway, filmmakers Sarah Klein and Tom Mason have slowed things down for us. The below short film—which they say is “about that moment in New York when you emerge from the subway and find yourself in a new and sometimes unexpected world”—is part of a larger series that will be filmed in London, Moscow, Paris and Hong Kong. Though they should really hit up Sweden’s stunning underground , too. [ more › ]

NY Post: DOT Commissioner Is a Sadistic Psycho
NY Post: DOT Commissioner Is a Sadistic Psycho

The NY Post is in the midst of a full-on assault against NYC DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, because the right-wing rag loves the internal combustion engine, doesn’t believe in climate change, and hates change. The tabloid has made no secret of its contempt for bike lanes and pedestrian plazas; therefore the DOT’s proposal to bring all three elements to 34th Street has the paper apoplectic. Following up on her colleague Steve Cuozzo’s rant last week, Post columnist Andrea Peyser turns up the rhetoric to 11 today: [ more › ]

Gary Winick, Producer and Director, Dies at 49
Gary Winick, Producer and Director, Dies at 49

The New York film scene lost a friend on Sunday when Gary Winick , 49, died of brain cancer . Comfortable in commercial film—Winick directed a number of movies the average filmgoer would know from 13 Going on 30 to Charlotte’s Web to Letters to Juliet —he was also a real force in what remained of independent film in the aughts. The independent film company he founded in 1999, InDigEnt, produced a number of flicks including Pieces of April , Personal Velocity , Tape and Tadpole (which he also directed and sold to Miramax for $6 million at the 2002 Sundance festival). On the Market: Brit-Inspired Manses Perfect for King’s Speech Devotees
On the Market: Brit-Inspired Manses Perfect for King’s Speech Devotees

Click the image above to view the full photogallery. After an Oscar win by The King’s Speech, can Americans look forward to a new generation of Anglophiles? Okay, okay, maybe not. But for those who simply cannot live without some affected British-isms there are plenty of homes in this country that could comfortably fly the Union Jack. These offerings might not share the seedy side story of a certain King’s Speech set, but they’ve got plenty of history. Take this low-slung manse in Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Bay Ridge neighborhood (above). Now for sale for $12M, the six-bedroom, Arts & Crafts-style home was once visited by Brit bard Oscar Wilde, who allegedly went on a 120-city tour praising its design. Click the image above to view the full photogallery. ↑ A bit further out on Long Island, in the Gold Coast township of Mill Neck, N.Y., this 1928 Tutor manor is waiting for a buyer. Set on 24 waterfront acres, the baronal estate features grand entertaining spaces adorned with fine wood carvings, and, it seems, a stubborn distaste for anything new. Life as a period piece, for just $17M. Click the image above to view the full photogallery. ↑ Not far away, in New Canaan, Conn. —and is it any surprise these British behemoths are parked in the toniest of New England towns?—lies this imposing brick mansion that does a bloody good impression of a stately English country home. For $9.75M, the next owner will receive a sprawling 18,000-square-foot, eight-bedroom manse dubbed Wexford Hall, replete with towering, vaulted ceilings. If this doesn’t scream landed gentry, nothing does. · The Most Beautiful Room in King’s Speech Was Once a Porno Set [Curbed National] · The Gingerbread House, Bay Ridge [BHS] · The Chimneys, Mill Neck [Sotheby's] · Wexford Hall, New Canaan [Sotheby's]

"I’m Like A Unicorn": Brooklynite Discusses Gmail Data Loss

Tens of thousands Gmail users found their accounts were, well, missing today in what Google calls an issue that affected “less than 0.02%” of its user base.” The issue was noted by the tech giant yesterday at 3 p.m. , and there hasn’t been an update on the Google Dashboard since 10 p.m. What are the afflicted doing? Well, one Brooklyn woman is getting sympathy from her coworkers—not to mention amazement from her friends, “I’m like a unicorn. They’re like ‘wow, you’re one of the people.’ I feel like I won the unlucky lottery or something.” [ more › ]

Midtown Gray’s Papaya Closes, UWS Gets C Grade
Midtown Gray’s Papaya Closes, UWS Gets C Grade

It’s not a good day for the Gray’s Papaya family. The Midtown location of the popular hot dog joint (you know, the one offering their dogs for 50 cents ) reportedly closed over the weekend due to “rent issues.” Though they’re planning on opening up another Midtown location soon, we recommend hitting up their downtown location if you’re craving a Recession Special, because their Upper West Side store scored a C grade on their last inspection. Ex-Cop/Karate Teacher Gets Nearly 22 Years For Molestation

Earlier today Trent Young, a 42-year-old former NYPD officer, was sentenced to 262 months in jail for transporting three different minors across state lines for illegal sexual activity. It is highly unlikely that Young will get a chance to serve his nearly 22 years in jail though—his sentence was delivered to him at the prison ward of the Westchester Medical Center where he is currently being treated for a cancer that the FBI refers to as terminal. New Yorkers Suck At Flirting
New Yorkers Suck At Flirting

This photo captioned “men and women flirting with each other outside Broadway dance hall near Times Square” would have one believe that New York was filled with flirts… but perhaps times have changed since 1944. According to a new study, the “most flirtatious city” in the world is Athens, Greece. Followed by Moscow (2nd), Rome (8th), Madrid (31st), Paris (38th), London (57th), Berlin (79th), and finally New York at #89. According to Reuters , Lonely Planet’s Athens expert agrees with the top result, calling the Greek capital “a seductive city, with a hedonistic lifestyle.” [ more › ]
