Cornell, Stanford Make Round Two Of NYC’s High-Tech School Sweepstakes

And then there were four. Though seven schools eventually submitted proposals for the high-tech college that Mayor Bloomberg is keen to throw free real estate and $100 million in infrastructure help at, hizzoner says he has already ruled out three of them . And while those schools have been informed they are out of the running, the apparently bored Bloomberg seems to think it is fun to not tell the rest of us. At least we know two of the four? The BQE Will Continue To Suck Pretty Much Forever

Bad news for anyone who commutes on four wheels, ever tries to get out of the city, or lives remotely near the highway: the BQE and the Gowanus expressway won’t be getting better anytime soon. The city has just killed plans to revamp and repair major chunks of both expressways, citing, unsurprisingly, a lack of cash. [ more › ]

Ali Lohan Says She Never Got Plastic Surgery

You know when Ali Lohan, sister of Lindsay, showed her face in September and it was a totally different face from the one she had previously? Well, following denials from her family members that she had plastic surgery and an eating disorder, she has finally spoken out for herself , telling Page Six Magazine: “I was cracking up. Because, like, when would I do that? I’m 17 years old. That’s not legal! I would need my mother’s signature, and do you think my mom would ever sign off on that?” Yes? Anyway, the 17-year-old, who is now modeling, says plastic surgery is “not the right thing to do,” and calls the rumors “stupid.” Also, she doesn’t do drugs when they’re offered to her, saying, “I just say no. I’m lucky enough that I had my sister to learn from. I’ve seen people do it to her, so I’ve learned to be like, ‘That’s stupid, no.’ That’s why me and Lindsay are also so close, because we’re able to talk about those things together.” It’s important to note that this interview with Page Six Magazine took place on Opposite Day. Video: Ray Kelly Heckled & Hailed For Making NYC Safe For "White Heterosexual Males"

Yesterday, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly was heckled during a Q&A period of David Dinkins’ graduate class at Columbia University. Kelly reportedly was unfazed by the outburst, which was in part spurred by alleged police misconduct during OWS protests, and made the sardonic comment, “Well, this is very intimidating.” Now, a tipster sent us a video of activist Matthew Swaye following Kelly out of the building and trying to award him the “2011 Bull Conner Award.” [ more › ]

A London Restaurant Charges A “Baby Tax”—Should We?

The debate over whether or not children should be allowed into restaurants enters a new stage today, with the news that one brave London restaurant charged one mother a small “baby tax” for bringing her spittle-strewn bundle of joy. Is this the closest thing to a compromise we’ll get? [ more › ]

Video Interlude: Watch a Guy Pedal a Bike to Make a Whole House Collapse

Hat tip to the blog Laughing Squid, which has recently featured the work of artist, sculptor, and messer-upper of everyday objects Michael Beitz. Beitz, who has a background in furniture design, has made chairs look like they’re growing clouds, sofas look like they’ve been twisted and tied into a knot, and dining tables look like the St. Louis arch. Below, he makes the bones of a house collapse and rise up again simply by pedaling a bike. “I started to see these objects as expressions of social functions that could be altered to describe certain anxieties or tensions which occur on or around such objects,” he’s recently said in an interview with Don’t Panic. Just watch, it’s cool. The Video: · michael beitz & matt monroe_folding house with sound [ YouTube via Laughing Squid ] · Michael Beitz [Don't Panic]

Motherf@*ker With The Hat Writer Blasts Casting Of White Actors As Puerto Ricans

Stephen Adly Guirgis’s play The Motherf@*ker With The Hat was hands-down the funniest play on Broadway this year, and actors Bobby Cannavale and Elizabeth Rodriguez were unforgettable as the story’s two star-crossed Latino lovers. They were both nominated for Tony Awards for their performances, and Big Ben Brantley at the Times wrote that “the broken, jagged heart of this production belongs to Ms. Rodriguez and Mr. Cannavale, who turn their characters’ relationship into a bruising, tragicomic apache dance of love, betrayal and indecision.” They’re tough enough acts to follow for regional theater actors, but in Hartford the director has made matters worse by inexplicably casting two white actors in the parts. Fiat Appeases Tats Cru For Showing Copyrighted Bronx Street Art In J.Lo Ad

One loose end in the saga of Jennifer Lopez’s controversial Fiat car commercial has been tied up: The carmaker has settled with NYC street artists , TATS Cru (“The Mural Kings”), for showing one of their Bronx murals in the ad, after they sent their lawyer to ask Chrysler (which owns Fiat) and ad agency Doner WTF . Wilfredo Feliciano, a TATS Cru member, said, “People are saying, ‘It’s in the public, and public is public.’ But music can be out in public. I’m pretty sure if I took someone’s music and did my own thing, somebody wouldn’t be happy about that.” [ more › ]
