Banged-Up Rangers Shake Up Practice Lines

Dave Scatchard on the top line? Blair Betts centering Martin Straka and Brendan Shanahan? No, the Rangers weren’t back to intrasquad training camp scrimmaging nowadays.

Rather, with Marcel Hossa still off the ice considering of a groin pull that has morphed into a hip flexor strain, tryout Scatchard filled his spot on the Scott Gomez-Jaromir Jagr line during practice. And with Brandon Dubinsky easing back into action after getting KOd by a Luke Richardson punch Saturday night — and being kept off skates for two days as a matter of protocol — Rangers coach Tom Renney deployed the rookie on the fourth line with Ryan Hollweg and Colton Orr nowadays.

All of that is subject to change by game date Thursday night in

Atlanta, of course. Though one thing should become clear by midday tomorrow: whether Hossa can’t practice, Renney said he nearly certainly will not play.

In the meanwhile, Scatchard’s tryout stint is about to run out and Rangers brass is deliberating whether to sign him or let him move onto another team in his attempt to get back into the NHL.
