We never thought we’d be the ones to defend your right to anonymously scrawl “bike lanes fart lampshade” on a post about food stamps but Albany’s idiocy so moves us. Identical bills that have been proposed in the Assembly and the Senate that would require New York websites to “remove any comments posted on his or her website by an anonymous poster unless such anonymous poster agrees to attach his or her name to the post.” [ more › ]

The first look at Baz Luhrman’s trailer for his 3-D version of The Great Gatsby has been released, and if you’ve seen his previous films ( Romeo+Juliet , Moulin Rouge ) then it will come as no surprise to see he’s created a vivid, over-the-top world from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel. It’s sort of like 1920s New York has been drenched in Moët and Hunter S. Thompson is reading the story to you while squeezing an eyedropper of LSD onto your skin everytime Eckleburg’s eyes appear. Have we mentioned the Moët? Count how many times you spot it in the trailer, which some say is longer than Gatz . [ more › ]

At long last, it’s a pleasure to announce that Curbed has touched down in Miami with today’s launch of Curbed Miami. The newest member of the Curbediverse has been a dream of ours for ages, and finally completes the golden triangle, so to speak, of the interwoven real estate markets of New York City and the Hamptons. The new site is headed by Miami native Sean McCaughan, who sets his sights on property gossip and architecture talk in Miami and beyond, including Broward and Palm Beach counties and the Florida Keys. That, however, is not all. Just in time for the summer season for those who summer, please welcome to the dancefloor Curbed Cape Cod, also launching at this exact second. The site will explore the real estate, architecture, retail, and restaurants in another crucial summer playground: Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket . Headed by Cape Cod resident Jaz Donaldson, the site joins Curbed National, Curbed NY, Curbed LA, Curbed SF, Curbed Hamptons, Curbed Chicago, Curbed DC, Curbed Seattle, Curbed Detroit, Curbed Atlanta, Curbed Boston, and Curbed Philly in our frenzied network. Meantime, the Eater sphere expands, too, with today’s launch of Eater Charleston, which casts wider the Eater net that presently includes Eater National and more than a dozen Eater city sites all over the country. Do drop by and say hello. · Curbed Miami Launches Today [Miami New Times] · Curbed Miami [official site] · Curbed Cape Cod [official site] · Eater Charleston [official site]

Midtown traffic had a serious rush hour hiccup yesterday when a speeding SUV struck, and seriously injured, a 20-year-old woman before hitting a taxi cab and a private sanitation truck. “I saw her kind of flying in the air,” Mohammed Gherabawy, whose cab was hit by the SUV told NBC . “And the guy, he was coming towards me, and I was trying to get out his way, he didn’t give me no chance. He just struck me from behind.” [ more › ]

Residents who live near the busy heliport on East 34th Street fought hard to get a curfew imposed in 1998, prohibiting landing and taking off on nights and weekends. Of course, such trivial things as noise and air pollution shouldn’t stop important plutocrats from going about their business. In the last six months, nearby resident Ron Sticco and his wife have caught the mayor’s helicopter breaking curfew sixteen times. [ more › ]

Photo: Reuters via Architizer New York has a new tallest building, and now Tokyo does too: during four years of construction, the Tokyo Sky Tree weathered tremors from last years infamous Japanese earthquake, but still managed to open to the public yesterday. Pop star Lady Gaga got a sneak peek at the observation deck a few days before, and missed out on some of the mishaps that accompanied opening day: high winds delayed many of the scheduled elevator rides and views were obstructed by a dense fog. But these flubs didn’t diminish local enthusiasm for the project, as many of the 8,000 guests—selected by lottery—turned out in Sky Tree costumes. The tower is now officially the second tallest in the world, behind Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, though the highest observation deck is at just 1,422 feet. Of course, that’s peanuts when compared to the developer’s next big thing: a 22,370-mile-high elevator to space that could be ready for riders by 2050. · Tokyo Sky Tree Opens [Architizer] · 22,370-Mile-High Space Elevator to Rise in Tokyo by 2050 [Curbed National]
