Curtain Rises Tonight on New Coney Island Show

The one thing that can be said about the discussions about giving Coney Island a radical redo is that it hasn’t been boring. There has been conflict. There have been surprises. And, tonight, there is likely to be a theatrical and very telegenic clash within supporters of the city’s new plan and new-organized opponents who liked the Thor Equities strategy better at the first in a series of public meetings. Opponents, led by State Sen. Carl Kruger, who shut down a November meeting, are said to be busing humans to the meeting, which will be held in a 1,200-seat auditorium. Supporters sent out an e mail for society to show up in costume,

like the ones at that demonstration. Why do we get the feeling the focus will be on political theater rather than the substance of the proposals?
