Freedom’s Treasures Exhibit (July 4-6) Features Washington’s Farewell Address and Other Revolutionary War Historical Artifacts

Governor Elliot Spitzer has invited the public to a free exhibit of Revolutionary War era documents and artifacts at the State Capitol, in Albany, July 4th-6th. The exhibition, entitled “Freedom’s Treasures,” features a collection from the New York State Library, Archives and Museum of some of New York’s most urgent Revolutionary Era artifacts that have rarely been seen by the public. Items from the State Library’s collection include some of George Washington’s papers and personal items, such as the original draft of his Farewell Address, his dress sword, pistol (a gift from the Marquis de Lafayette), and his copy of the “Cloathing Book” (1742), a book of colored engravings of

British military costume. “Freedom’s Treasures” will be open to the public from 10 AM to 4 PM on July 4th in the State Capitol’s ceremonial Red Room. The display will remain available for public viewing on July 5th and 6th through scheduled Capitol tours.
