Last Night’s Action: Devils Double Up Rangers

Devils 6, Rangers 3: This game started off with the Devils and Rangers trading goals. Then the Rangers forgot to score. Vinny Prospal answered Rob Niedermayer, Erik Christensen answered Bryce Salvador and then Brandon Prust answered Zach Parise. But the Devils countered with three unanswered goals — scored by Jamie Langenbrunner, Brian Rolston and Travis Zajac. The Rangers are finding themselves in serious trouble in the playoff race. Spurs 97, Knicks 87: The Knicks died by the 3-pointer in this one. They made only two of 17 attemps. Tracy McGrady had six points. David Lee led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Mavericks 96, Nets 87: Almost the same score in Texas. The Nets blew a 14-point lead after the first quarter and an eight-point lead at halftime. Devin Harris, who must be hating life right now, had 21 points. Georgetown 69, South Florida 49: South Florida’s Dominique Jones is the best Big East player no one talks about, but he couldn’t lift his Bulls past Georgetown. He had 21 points, but the rest of the team only had 10 points. Three Hoyas had 15 or more points. Georgetown, which had a bye, will face Syracuse, which had a double-bye, in Thursday’s first quarterfinal. Marquette 57, St. John’s 55: The Red Storm put up a valiant effort after its upset over Connecticut on Tuesday, but it was no match for Marquette’s skill in close games. Lazar Hayward had 20 points — and four 3-pointers — to help put Marquette into a quarterfinal against Louisville. Notre Dame 68, Seton Hall 56: The Irish are probably going dancing. After this win, they are probably off the bubble. Luke Harangody had 20 points — off the bench — to lead his team into a quarterfinal vs. Pittsburgh.
