Last Night’s Action: Offense Saves Sabathia

Yankees 12, White Sox 9: CC Sabathia has saved the Yankees’ bacon many times this season, but this time the offense saved his. Marcus Thames had two of the Yankees’ four homers as New York picked up a critical game in Chicago. Mark Teixeira left the game with a bruised thumb, but that didn’t stop the Yankees from scoring 12 runs. The bullpen almost gave up the lead before Mariano Rivera came in to shut the door and give Sabathia, who allowed five runs in seven innings, his 18th win. Nick Swisher went deep as did Eduardo Nunez for the first time in his career. Nunez finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Astros 4, Mets 1: Houston got two runs off Johan Santana in the first and never looked back. The lefty gave up four in eight seven innings to fall to 10-9. The Mets got their lone run in the eighth on a David Wright single.
