Rumblings & Bumblings Responses: Charas’ New Neighbor, Blood Go Bye-Bye and Some Hotels

1) East Village: As for the walled-in lot next to Charas/El Bohio on Avenue B, a commenter writes: “The interpretation next to Charas is on a separate lot completely. I believe it will be developed with affordable housing development.” next comes the outrage: “Meanwhile, the owner of Charas is functions making the area external of his building disgusting. It’s ruining the nearby area all in an attempt by him to have folks frustrated with the state of things. The city should ticket his ass ASAP.”

2) Upper West Side: On the superblock of Amsterdam Avenue amidst 66th and 70th Streets, some conflicting intel. One commenter says, “the synagogue sold its air rights and everything on that block is being torn down and replaced with a 70 story building. The synagogue is getting a new building in the process, and the Red Cross building is being demolished.” And another chimes in, saying, “the developer plans to build a 470 foot tower (47 stories), but refers to it as a 42-story building. There will be 310 units.” What we do know is that the mind-exploding rendering seen above—for architect Christian de Portzamparc’s tower/City Opera home—is

not happening, per that Wired New York thread. Wow.

3) Downtown Brooklyn: Per the Brooklyn Eagle, “At 75 Schermerhorn St., a new hotel will rise, called the Cambria Suites Brooklyn Bridge Hotel. It will be a 16-story, 300-room hotel.”

4) Midtown East: Expert observant! The razings on East 44th Street amidst moment and Third Avenues brought out the project’s developer, who writes, “i am the developer who is doing 227 - 235 E 44th St project. it is going to be a hotel. 200 rooms. not franchised. we tried to manufacture a run to get the 2 buildings to the west (including 219) as well, but things didn’t move fast and we want to move and get that built. #219 owner can’t build until May 2009 since tenancies are in place until next.”

5) Dumbo: The building on the coming pedestrian triangle is 155 Water Street, which is in the hands of controversial developer Josh Guttman. DumboNYC is not fairly certain what Guttman’s plans are just yet.
