Commissioner Ray Kelly clarified yesterday that contrary to earlier reports, no struggle occurred between 18-year-old Ramarley Graham and the officer who fatally shot him in the bathroom of his Bronx home on Thursday. The Post reports that the two officers involved have been stripped of their weapons and assigned to desk duty, and the case will be presented to a grand jury to determine whether a crime was committed. “We’re still evaluating the actions here,” Kelly said. “We see an unarmed person being shot. That always concerns us.” [ more › ]

There hasn’t been a Montauk Monster sighting for a while, and maybe that’s thanks to artist Davis Murphy , who recently brought some wildlife to the sandy shores of Long Island. The preponderance of big chain stores on the Upper West Side could be severely reversed under a plan introduced by the Department of City Planning . Acting on concerns from the Upper West Side community and elected officials, the city is considering rezoning part of the neighborhood to create two Special Enhanced Commercial Districts. Each of these zones would limit the frontage of new and expanding banks and residential lobbies along Broadway, Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues. Overall store size would not be restricted, so big chains could still burrow underground, but city planners argue that “over time the general multi-store character of Amsterdam and Columbus avenues would be maintained, while promoting a more varied and active retail environment on Broadway.” [ more › ]

The history of Broadway is littered with ill-advised sequels that didn’t quite work (see: Bring Back Birdie or The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public ) but the biggest sequel of them all, the Phantom followup Love Never Dies (in which the masked musician moves to Coney Island to open the “Phantasma”), will most likely never even make it to the Great White Way. But! It will be playing on 42nd Street. At least a filmed version of it will. Camp fans might want to mark February 28th and March 7th on their calendars! [ more › ]
