Following the relative failures of national anti-cigarette and anti-drug campaigns, the Times asks, do scare tactics work? And do the city’s ads qualify as “scary?” “The definition of a scare tactic is a non-credible risk message,” Steve Pasierb, the president of the Partnership at Drugfree.org says. In an article that confirms all of the suspicions about why the Susan G. Komen Foundation decided to defund breast cancer prevention programs at Planned Parenthood, the Huffington Post reports that a Komen source says vice president for public policy Karen Handel was the “main force behind the decision to defund Planned Parenthood and the attempt to make that decision look nonpolitical.” The source said, “Karen Handel was the prime instigator of this effort, and she herself personally came up with investigation criteria. She said, ‘If we just say it’s about investigations, we can defund Planned Parenthood and no one can blame us for being political.’” [ more › ]

Lest you go into some sort of shock, head straight over to Sam’s Bakery in Bay Ridge, where they’re slingin’ some chicken wing cupcakes made by the Robicelli’s folk. Depending on your tastes, there are two options: the buffalo chicken wing cupcake, and the chicken & waffle cupcake. While yesterday they threatened this would be the last chance until April to get the winged treats, just this afternoon they confirmed they’re still at Sam’s (but you may want to call ahead). In the Times Real Estate section this weekend an enterprising Kips Bay resident wrote in to suggest that the small neighborhood next to Murray Hell Hill be renamed NoEVil.
