Behold The Grand New Entrance To The Coney Island Boardwalk

In the near future, beach-goers and amusement-lovers will no longer be reduced to entering the Coney Island Boardwalk like rats scurrying up the gangplank to a rotting death ship. For time immemorial, visitors have reached the boardwalk at 10th Street via two depressing ramps located on either side of the street—and it’s a miracle anyone makes it to the top without killing themselves in despair. But come 2014, mankind will at last access the legendary Sands of Coney via a grand beachfront entrance fit for pharaohs and captains of industry . Just don’t let the guys on unicycles while juggling torches set you on fire! [ more › ]

Happy Belated Birthday Oreo, We Had No Idea You Were Born In NYC!

Yesterday the Oreo cookie turned 100 years young, and although half the office was diving into Double Stufs all day, we didn’t give the cookie any ink. We just assumed the cookie was from Ohio or something! But this morning we learned (via this handy PDF sent to us) that in 1912 the first Oreo rolled off the line at… the Chelsea Market in Manhattan! Which makes sense since from 1898 the building was the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) factory complex. [ more › ]

Are People Still Paying $2,000 For High-End Hookers? (Probably)

After seeing the menu presented to Eliot Spitzer, it’s easy to understand how Manhattan Madam Anna Gristina reportedly made millions by charging clients thousands of dollars for each encounter. According to the Daily News, “Dream Model” girls cost $1,000, and the “Ultimate Elite Model” experience could be more than $2,000. Friend of Gothamist and CNBC reporter John Carney’s Wall Street sources don’t buy it. “Maybe this was true in 2006. No one is paying $2000 these days. I’m not even sure anyone ever did. Not for one girl.” But our own sources say this pricing is alive and well. “Those expensive women are the ones you actually want to be seen with,” a source says. [ more › ]

Video: Breaking Into Brooklyn’s Industrial Waterfront

Brooklyn has many monuments regular folk don’t get invited into on a regular basis—and of those, the Domino Sugar plant that anchors the endangered Brooklyn Industrial waterfront looms large. Though it is eventually going to go residential , the area remains out of reach for most of us for now ( most of the time ). Unless of course you are willing to climb some fences: [ more › ]

Video: Brown Tap Water In Bushwick Is Not Specifically Too Good

The tap water in a section of Bushwick near the border of Queens is coming out filthy and stinking, as you can see from these disgusting photos and video. A tipster who resides on Linden Street between Myrtle and Wyckoff tells us that as of last night “all the water on my block is running yellowish-brown with little bits of particulate that settle out of it if you let it sit. The water has a metallic, sort of hard smell with a hint of sewer. Apparently it’s not just my building, but the whole block. I’m contacting other neighbors in the area to see how big the phenomenon is. Pretty gross!” Gross, indeed: [ more › ]
