A Bronx elementary school teacher is suing the city after the school’s principal allegedly became enamored with her, rubbing up against her, winking at her and hugging her. According to the lawsuit obtained by the Post, Kristin Erat, Grant Avenue Elementary School’s principal since 2009, kept a photo of Barbara Woods in her desk, and once “told Woods that [she] cannot stop thinking about” her. When Woods informed Erat that she was straight, Erat became “upset, surprised, and disappointed.” [ more › ]

For years we’ve been discussing the fate of the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s beloved 19th-century houses that make up Admiral’s Row . Our own Jake Dobkin even risked life and limb to get inside and document the houses in their beautiful decay , as the city talked of plans for leveling them. Despite protests to salvage the Row, it looks like its destiny is destruction, and this Monday nine of the eleven structures will be cleared, with two—the Timber Shed and Quarters B—being restored “for daily use,” according to the NY Times . These have now been “transferred by the federal government to the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, which manages the old 300-acre yard, now an industrial park of 275 businesses.” [ more › ]

After nearly a year-long face lift, the South Street Seaport Museum has reopened, under the auspices of The Museum of the City of New York , which will be paying $5 million out of the museum’s operating budget on a trial basis for a year-and-a-half. The museum, which features an array of historical ephemera including old full-size ships, beautiful model ships (seen here), vintage photographry and much more, has struggled financially in the past, spending a decade in arrears to the city’s Economic Development Corporation for rent and utilities, the Times reports . Could we solve the city’s growing homeless problem without a shelter system? According to a report being released today by Picture the Homeless and the Center for Community Planning & Development at Hunter College we totally could. Click here to view the full photogallery. Looks like it’s time to update the Celebrity Real Estate Heat Map: A-lister of A-listers Jennifer Aniston has reportedly scooped up new mansion for herself in Bel-Air, Calif. The pristine 8,500-square-foot four-bedroom was designed in 1965 by noted Los Angeles modernist architect A. Quincy Jones; after first hitting the market for $29M in 2008, the house was reduced to some $24M, at which point Aniston swooped in and scored it for even less: $21M. And as if this lucky lady didn’t already have enough of them, here are yet some more perks: more than three acres of land, views of the city and ocean, a pool, a guesthouse, a wine cellar, and—last but certainly not least—a vineyard. Let’s not forget to look inside: those distinctly midcentury-feeling interiors boasts gleaming wood floors, full-wall expanses of glass, and some pretty stunning fireplace detail. Aniston’s had quite an impressive year in terms of real estate. The actress listed and then sold her spectacular Ohana estate, a Beverly Hills beaut that was once featured on the cover of Architectural Digest. She swiftly found another Beverly Hills estate in which to shack up with new beau Justin Theroux. Let’s not forget her East Coast accommodations, either: her new SoCal new pad is located just a plane ride away from her nest overlooking Central Park. In short: life looks pretty fine when you’re her. · All Jennifer Aniston coverage [Curbed National] · JENNIFER ANISTON Buys SICKEST Mansion Ever!!! [TMZ] · New to Market: A. In New York we get to enjoy the snow for about five minutes before it’s turned into a dirt slushee. After that, layers of yellow are added by the city’s canines (and sometimes humans), along with street grime, and other little treats (rocks, needles, whatever). What we’re saying is, our snow is dirty and depressing enough that the least we could do is pick the dog shit out of it. So this little pet etiquette reminder is for you, dog owners. [ more › ]

Over the weekend the Boombox Party took to our city, basically bringing people (some in suits, none in Lloyd Dobler trench coats) to the streets with boomboxes, which were all blasting a mix tape filled with what sounds like mostly predictable songs. To be honest, it looked kind of annoying, but you know, we’ve been waging war against “fun” lately… just see (and listen) for yourself in this below video documentation. [ more › ]
Eric Fischer created a map showing Twitter traffic based on location, noting, “Broadway as the spine is not difficult to believe. Data from the Twitter streaming API (10000 points, 30000 vectors). Base map from OpenStreetMap, CC-BY-SA.” Basically, it follows the city’s biggest—and apparently most connected—corridors. [ more › ]
