Ja Rule: Prison An "Amazing" Place To Meet White Collar Criminals, Crooked Pols

Rapper Ja Rule is serving a two-year sentence for attempted criminal possession of a firearm (a loaded .40 was found in his car in 2007 )—plus another four months for tax evasion —and he seems pretty upbeat. At least, that what this exclusive interview and video from the Daily News suggest: “The Queens-raised rap star says disgraced pol Alan Hevesi and corporate greed poster-boy Dennis Kozlowski took him under their wings. From Kozlowski, he got stock tips. From Hevesi, he heard about the perennial impasse in Albany. They watched Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert together.” Ja Rule said, ” Outside, you don’t meet guys like this every day. This place is amazing. ” [ more › ]

Alleged Cop Shooter Praises Latin Kings At Rowdy Perp Walk, Sister Curses Police

Luis “Baby” Ortiz, who is accused of shooting NYPD officer Kevin Brennan in the head Tuesday night at the Bushwick Houses, showed no remorse as he was escorted out of the 90th Precinct station house yesterday afternoon. “Yeah, take a picture of me,” Ortiz, 21, told photographers during the perp walk as he smiled, blew kisses to family and friends, and mugged for the cameras. In Spanish, he yelled “I love the Latin Kings,” adding, “You know what it is,” according to the Daily News . His angry supporters also showed little remorse. [ more › ]

After Abandoning Kids, Brooklyn Mom Broke Out The Bubbly

It seems the Brooklyn mom who abandoned her two young daughters alongside the Shore Parkway Sunday afternoon didn’t waste any time celebrating her freedom. Not long after leaving the girls on the street with some fresh diapers, Dalisha Adams uploaded this photo to her Facebook page showing a shirtless man holding a bottle of champagne. The Facebook profile seems to have been deleted or set to private (her MySpace page is still active) but the Daily News says the photo appeared on her Facebook page around 6:15; some four hours after dumping her daughters and five hours before she turned herself in to police. NYPD Sources: Ray Kelly’s Son Had Consensual Sex, Not Rape

At this stage it’s impossible to predict the outcome of the Manhattan DA’s investigation into Greg Kelly’s alleged rape of an unidentified woman last October, but while we wait we may as well pass the time speculating on the identify of the woman’s boyfriend. Kelly, the co-host of “Good Day New York” and son of NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly, has not been charged, and because of the high profile nature of the case, the DA’s office is said to be proceeding with extreme caution (the bitter backwash of the Dominique Strauss-Kahn investigation is probably another factor). But one unidentified source tells the Daily News the investigation could be wrapped up soon—and the tabloid has all but identified the boyfriend of Kelly’s accuser. [ more › ]

Mom Gives Daughters Diapers, Abandons Them On Brooklyn Street

Two little girls, ages 5 and 3, were found wandering on the edge of the busy Shore Parkway in Canarsie yesterday, clutching extra diapers given to them by their mother before she abandoned them. In a particularly heartbreaking exclusive, the Daily News reports that an elderly couple noticed the girls playing on the sidewalk without supervision in front of the Bay View Houses on Shore Parkway. “They were wandering up and down the sidewalk for a while, just playing by themselves,” says one witness. “It’s horrible. How could you leave your own children out there? They’re babies and you just leave them out there like that?” [ more › ]

Pro Tip: Don’t Ask Your Students If They’ve Had Anal Sex

Thorough investigation of that meme that no one is the slightest bit tired of reveals that teachers, in fact, do not say “Have you ever had anal sex?” This is apparently why 52-year-old science teacher Bart Ocuto left Sheepshead Bay High School this year. The Daily News reports that in addition to asking a female student about her abstinence-life, Ocuto described the Three Bases system to another student: “tongue and touching…blow job…all the way.” Perhaps Ocuto should have been fired for his misreading of the 1974 Hickey Accords: since when was second base oral sex? Globe Trotting: Here Now, 20 Tiny "EcoLofts" Above Mexico’s Wine Country
Globe Trotting: Here Now, 20 Tiny "EcoLofts" Above Mexico’s Wine Country

Photo via Arch Daily This is rather awesome: Endémico Resguardo Silvestre, a series of 20 modernist hotel rooms, of sorts, each 215 square feet, perched above the Valle de Guadalupe wine region in Mexico. Designed by architect Jorge Garcia and completed last year, the so-called “EcoLofts” are part of a 99-hectare development that also includes a winery and housing. Composed of a steel frame (a plentiful material in the region) and wood, each room hovers above the ground without touching it—part of the architect’s vision of keeping the landscape undisturbed. (Minus—as one anonymous Curbed commenter points out—the steel supports and the poured concrete entry deck.) Below, find another photo. WiFi Signal With Bigoted, Anti-Semitic Name Prompts Investigation

Some people give their WiFi network wacky ironic names to discourage neighbors from using it, like “Free Viruses” and “We_Can_Hear_You_Having_Sex.” Over in Teaneck, N.J., they push the envelope a little bit, at least at the local recreation center, where someone gave the WiFi network at the Richard Rodda Community Center a very offensive name. “When I first saw it, I said, ‘Did that say what I thought it said?,” a local woman tells the Daily News . “I was shocked, hurt. I felt harassed.” Which is understandable, because the WiFi in question was named “F— All Jews And N—-.” [ more › ]

Baby Born On PATH Train Already Has Nickname: Fast

The baby whose emergence from the womb aboard a PATH train yesterday made the train miraculously run express already has a nickname: “Jhatpat,” the Hindi word for “Fast.” The boy’s blissed-out parents, Rabita Sarkar and her husband Aditya Saurabh, have not settled on a formal name yet, but Sarker tells the Daily News , “He decided to come and that was it. Nothing could stop him. Nothing could keep him inside for longer.” She says they decided to take the PATH to their Manhattan doctor because they were worried about getting stuck in rush hour traffic in the Lincoln tunnel. (A distinct possibility !) They also thought this was just a practice run! [ more › ]
