MTA Issues Warning To Avoid These Stations During Super Bowl Ticker-Tape Parade

Given the massive crowds expected downtown tomorrow to celebrate the New York Giant’s Super Bowl win , the MTA has issued a press release instructing fans on what subway stations to use, as well as which ones to “avoid.” According to the MTA, these because of the anticipated mob scene, these stations will be bypassed starting at 10 a.m.: The Fulton Street 4/5, the Fulton Street A/C, the Wall Street 4/5, the City Hall R, and the Chambers Street-WTC (the E will discharge customers at Canal Street, A and C will bypass). Following the relative failures of national anti-cigarette and anti-drug campaigns, the Times asks, do scare tactics work? In an article that confirms all of the suspicions about why the Susan G. Komen Foundation decided to defund breast cancer prevention programs at Planned Parenthood, the Huffington Post reports that a Komen source says vice president for public policy Karen Handel was the “main force behind the decision to defund Planned Parenthood and the attempt to make that decision look nonpolitical.” The source said, “Karen Handel was the prime instigator of this effort, and she herself personally came up with investigation criteria. She said, ‘If we just say it’s about investigations, we can defund Planned Parenthood and no one can blame us for being political.’” [ more › ]

The history of New York City is littered with neighborhood names that have stuck—South of Houston, SoHo; Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, DUMBO—and those that have not stuck nearly as well— Pro-Cro , Crown Heights; North of Madison Park, NoMad—so hopefully the latest one being proposed will be disposed of quickly. In the Times Real Estate section this weekend an enterprising Kips Bay resident wrote in to suggest that the small neighborhood next to Murray Hell Hill be renamed NoEVil.
