Torrisi Italian Specialties Guys Eye Tavern On The Green

The owners of the hot and trendy restaurants Torrisi Italian Specialties and Parm are among the restaurateurs sniffing around the dessicated corpse of Tavern on the Green , which the Parks Department showed off to potential operators today. “We’re taking it all in,” Torrisi co-owner Zalaznick told City Room during the tour this morning. “The question is how casual they’ll let the restaurant be. It used to be a pretty formal place.” During the tour and Q&A that followed, the Parks Department let it be known that they do indeed want the new iteration of Tavern to be casual and accessible. The city is spending $10 million to renovate and shrink it, and the Wall Street Journal reports that Assistant Parks Commissioner Betsy Smith made it clear that the new Tavern should be “a moderately priced restaurant” that’s not as “fanciful and glitzy as before.” [ more › ]

Meet The Mysterious Cheesemonger Behind The Quotable Fromage

Yesterday we brought you the unexpected discovery of a James Patterson quotation on a block of mimolette cheese at Chelsea’s Westside Market. Intrigued, we ventured to the store in search of the mind behind the rind. And there we discovered Peter “The Doctor” Daniels, a seven-year cheese man of the Westside Market and a 25-year veteran of the food industry, who started putting quotations on the cheese just to fill a labeling void. “There’s extra space where a description is supposed to go but I found that people weren’t reading them,” he explains. ” I thought I would put something else that people could be inspired by. ” [ more › ]

Unexpected, Bizarre Literary Reference On This Piece Of Cheese

Someone in the cheese department at the Westside Market has gotten creative with the cheese labeling. Or as Kathy Cacace notes in her Tweet: has “fucking lost their mind.” The description on this chunk of mimolette reads: “Sara had been gone for 25 years, and in all that time I hadn’t found any new ways to cope. Only to miss her.” This appears to be from James Patterson’s book, Run For Your Life , where he writes something similar about a woman named “Maeve.” [ more › ]

JFK Fried Chicken Sued By Bus Driver Who Choked On Metal Coil In Chicken Breast

Don’t let that “A” grade from the Health Department fool you; according to MTA bus driver Lajzer Grynsztajn, there’s bad chicken being served at that JFK Fried Chicken outlet in Sunset Park. Grynsztajn, an MTA bus driver, has filed a lawsuit against the restaurant, alleging that a 2-inch wire coil got lodged in his throat as he ate some chicken breast at the establishment. “I felt a sharp pain, like I was choking,” he tells the Daily News . “I thought I was choking on a bone.” He says he soon started coughing up blood, and had to go to the hospital to have it removed.
