The latest case out of the Suffolk County DA’s office couldn’t be better timed to Tax Day. According to DA Thomas Spota, a former manager at a nonprofit health agency on Long Island stole IDs from more than 50 patients with brain injuries—so that he could get their tax refunds . Which strikes us as a lot of dreary paperwork for an estimated $20,000 in New York state refunds. [ more › ]

[ UPDATE BELOW ] The tolerance shown by the NYPD last week towards the group of Occupy Wall Street protesters sleeping across the street from the NYSE evaporated this morning, as police cleared the sidewalk on Broad Street. According to the Times’ Colin Moynihan, the order to vacate was given at 6 a.m., and for the next few hours police corralled the 100 or so protesters up the street so the sidewalk could be power washed. Four were arrested in the process, and one protester was punched in the face by an officer after he swung a bag at an NYPD camera documenting the action. [ more › ]

Proving yet again that it has every amenity as the rest of the city, a coyote was spotted at the site of the old Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island. Nick Mirto was dropping off a load of soil at 7:45 a.m. on Thursday when something caught his eye. “I just looked to the left, and there he was, about 30 feet from the road we just drove down,” Mirto told the Staten Island Advance. “He looks very healthy. There’s plenty of food in there for him to eat.” [ more › ]
New York City’s sales tax hiatus on clothing less than $110 has led us to spend countless hours in the Croc store. But Long Island residents of Nassau and Suffolk counties can never taste the joy of having “Classic Digi Camo” polyurethane on their feet, tax-free: their counties are too poor to participate in the exemption. “When times are tight like they are now, you may find fighting between counties,” a Hofstra Business School professor tells CBS. But that in turn helps Long Island’s greatest export: YouTube videos. [ more › ]

Former half-term Alaska governor and Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin co-hosted the Today Show today (as part of the NBC’s program to counter Katie Couric’s stint on Good Morning, America ). The show spoofed her love of printed media and also showed her “taking over” Matt Lauer’s dressing room . How come Bob Dole never got a gig like this? [ more › ]

We’ve seen apocalyptic scenes from New York City before, and they always involve the subway system overgrown with weeds and empty streets with old newspapers blowing around like tumbleweeds. This photo series from Lucie and Simon, titled ” Silent World ,” shows the world’s busiest cities abandoned… for the most part. There are a few lucky leftovers who get to explore the city without noise, cars, or fellow humans around to get in their way… or maybe they are the unlucky ones? It all seems a little creepy to us, especially when you watch this video of the series, set to the music of Philip Glass and Daft Punk. [ more › ]

Remember the uproar when people found out about a list of words and phrases that the Department of Education no longer found acceptable for city-issued tests? The DOE would like you to forget about all that. The Department quietly announced yesterday that the taboo test topics—which included words like “cancer,” “divorce,” “politics” and “war”—have been scrapped. [ more › ]

Long Island City, Queens, is getting a little more Mexican this week. That’s because the guys behind Bar Henry have branched out to the borough to open a 40-seat spot there, Casa Enrique, focusing on the regional cuisine of Chiapas, Mexico’s southernmost state. Why Chiapas? That just happens to be where the chef and the general manager hail from. [ more › ]
