Dear Readers: Send Us Your Worst Valentine’s Day Stories!

It’s February 1st, which means we’re only two weeks away from Valentine’s Day—the perfect day of the year to Facebook stalk former flames, or just load up on carbs and reflect on all the horrible dating choices you’ve made in your life. After reading some particularly inspiring V-Day publicity press releases, we started thinking about the unfortunate things that have befallen us on Valentine’s Days past. So let’s share in the misery together: if you have a terrible Valentine’s Day story, send it to tips@gothamist.com before Feb. 10, and we’ll pool all our miserable experiences into a collage of misunderstandings, awkwardness and rejection. Because Cupid Valentino was wrong when he said everyday is the 14th —love truly does hurt that much more on holidays carefully constructed by greeting card companies. [ more › ]

Celebrity Real Estate: Buy the Home Where Johnny Cash Spent His Very Last Days

Photo via Zillow Blog While not officially on the market, the Hendersonville, Tenn., home where Johnny Cash lived out his life is quietly available for sale. According to Zillow Blog, the house, built by architect Braxton Dickson, was last listed for $595K and is ripely available to interested buyers. The four-bedroom is located directly across the street from the lake house that’s eternalized in the song “House on the Lake,” written by Cash’s eldest daughter, Rosanne (who, just last year, was petitioning the National Trust For Historic Preservation to save her dad’s boyhood home in Arkansas). June and Johnny lived in the lake house, their true spiritual center, for nearly their entire 35-year marriage, but eventually Johnny moved when the lake house proved too difficult to maneuver with a wheelchair. The 3,100-square-foot ranch he retired to was at one point inhabited by his mom. Remember Cynthia, The A-List Mannequin Who Hit Up NYC’s Hot Spots?

In 1932 the artist Lester Gaba, not unlike Andrew McCarthy’s character in the 1987 classic Mannequin , created Cynthia , a mannequin for Saks Fifth Avenue. Cynthia was “a 100-pound model who had realistic imperfections like freckles, pigeon toes, and even different sized feet.” Five years later, Gaba posed with Cynthia around New York City for a LIFE magazine spread which supposedly “launched the career of an up-and-coming starlet [and] made Cynthia a household name overnight.” [ more › ]

Video Interlude: Preserving Jazz Legend John Coltrane’s Long Island Home

Giant of jazz John Coltrane spent the last years of his life in this simple Long Island home, including the seminal moment when he wrote perhaps his greatest masterpiece, “A Love Supreme.” Fifty years later, the house is still standing, if in dilapidated condition, thanks to the efforts of preservationists like Steve Fulgoni. The Coltrane fan staved off a development that would have knocked the place down and has kept the interiors exactly as they were left following Coltrane’s death, from liver cancer, at age 40. The BBC came to profile the property, and left with interviews with Fulgoni and Coltrane’s son Ravi, who remembers his parents building a recording studio in the basement. The ranch house has recently been placed on the National Trust’s list of Most Endangered homes, so check out the video while the place is still standing. · Saving the house of jazz legend John Coltrane [BBC News]
