A plainclothed Brooklyn cop was badly injured when he was pinned between cars during a routine traffic stop yesterday. According to the Post , the unidentified detective had pulled over a black vehicle in Flatbush with four men inside; he was standing behind the car when a white van rammed into him, crushing his legs and sending blood everywhere. “When they pulled him out of the car, his legs were hanging, dangling, it was terrible, there was blood everywhere,” said one witness. Mayor Bloomberg today held a press conference to tout the fact that, as of December 27th, this year boasted the fewest annual traffic fatalities since records started being kept in 1910! All in all there were 237 traffic fatalities this year— down from 271 last year and 393 in 2001 . Of those, 134 were pedestrian fatalities, according to the city, which is down 31 percent from 2001. Police say they’ve apprehended the man who impersonated a police officer in order to lure a 15-year-old boy into his van and sexually assault him. Suspect Steven Pappas , 50, is a level 3 sex offender who was just released from prison this month after a burglary case. NBC New York reports that his sex abuse arrest was from 2000 and involved a 14-year-old. 14 Muslim leaders have fired off a sternly-worded letter to Mayor Bloomberg announcing their intention to boycott his annual interfaith breakfast on Friday, which brings together religious and political leaders from all over the spectrum for a friendly coffee klatsch. At issue is a damning series of articles in the Associated Press detailing the NYPD’s targeting of Muslim communities for surveillance. Commissioner Ray Kelly has firmly denied this, telling the City Council , “We don’t do it ethnically, we do it geographically. We don’t racially profile, we follow leads wherever those leads take us.” The NYCLU, however, calls it a “rogue domestic surveillance operation,” and in November hundreds of Muslims demonstrated outside police headquarters.
