Muslim Leaders Boycott Bloomberg’s Interfaith Breakfast To Protest NYPD Surveillance

14 Muslim leaders have fired off a sternly-worded letter to Mayor Bloomberg announcing their intention to boycott his annual interfaith breakfast on Friday, which brings together religious and political leaders from all over the spectrum for a friendly coffee klatsch. At issue is a damning series of articles in the Associated Press detailing the NYPD’s targeting of Muslim communities for surveillance. Commissioner Ray Kelly has firmly denied this, telling the City Council , “We don’t do it ethnically, we do it geographically. We don’t racially profile, we follow leads wherever those leads take us.” The NYCLU, however, calls it a “rogue domestic surveillance operation,” and in November hundreds of Muslims demonstrated outside police headquarters. Jehovah’s Witness Jumps To Death In Brooklyn

A Jehovah’s Witness jumped to his death from a Brooklyn rooftop yesterday. According to police, Dwayne Fagan, 48, jumped from the top of his apartment building in the Linden Houses in East New York just before 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon as bystanders looked on. “I thought someone had thrown an air conditioner off the roof. I screamed and screamed for a minute straight,” said witness Antoinette George, who also lives in the building. [ more › ]

Matilda The Cat Leaves The Algonquin… But Only For Four Months

When Matilda the Algonquin Hotel cat updated her Facebook this week saying, “Getting my suitcases down and gathering up my toys—travel time is almost here,” we worried that Mayor Bloomberg was booting her from the hotel, following some troubles with the Department of Health . Then Matilda added , “They think I don’t know—but am being taken to the vet today for my travel check up—then to the passport office (ooops—am I telling you too much?)” When we tried to contact her via email, we got an out of office reply, saying, ” Happy Holidays FURiends. Matilda .” So, finally, we made the call. [ more › ]

Q Train Will Be Screwed Most Weekends Until March

The MTA’s been planning to screw up your winter commute with consecutive subway shutdowns for a while, but we thought the Q train was safe—until now. Starting in January and lasting through March, there will be no Q train service across parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, so get ready to bundle up for your good pal the shuttle bus instead. Non-New Yorkers Die Sooner Than Their Betters In NYC

Well, it seems there’s some consolation for those of you who choose to reside anywhere other than the greatest city in America! Non-New Yorkers can least look forward to their baffling, blinkered lives ending sooner than if they’d actually followed their dreams in the big city. At a press conference at a Bronx maternity ward today, Mayor Bloomberg announced that babies born in NYC in 2009 have an average life expectancy of 80.6 years, nearly two and a half years more than the most recently reported national rate of 78.2 years. And though there’s no official research on this, it’s safe to assume that those extra two and a half years in NYC are packed with mindblowing sex and prolific novel-writing. [ more › ]

Director Abel Ferrarra Might Make DSK Movie Starring Gerard Depardieu

This has the potential to be the greatest movie of all time: Deadline reports that writer-director Abel Ferrara has be working on a script “partly inspired by this summer’s sex scandal surrounding former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn.” Also: “Gérard Depardieu and Isabelle Adjani have been rumored circling characters based on the scandal-plagued former IMF chief and his wife Anne Sinclair and have met with the director.” [ more › ]

Federal Judge: NYC’s Taxis Totally Discriminate Against Disabled Riders

Just days after Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Cuomo worked out their differences and agreed on a plan to allow livery cabs to take street-hails in the outer-boroughs, a federal judge has hit the brakes. U.S. District Court Judge George Daniels said that the current fleet of taxis do discriminate against people with disabilities and the city may only issue new medallions or “street-hail” permits to wheelchair-accessible taxi cabs and livery cabs. Yesterday, Korzavin’s charges were upgraded to aggravated vehicular homicide from manslaughter, after it was revealed his blood alcohol level was .32, four times over the legal limit. [ more › ]

Mediocre Royale: Bloomberg And Christie Weigh In On Jets/Giants Battle

After a week of trash talking , the underperforming Jets and Giants are gearing up for Saturday’s thoroughly mediocre “battle of NYC.” Both teams still have a chance to make the playoffs, but the loser of tomorrow’s game may be done for the season. We’re just relieved one NY team can win this week, after last week’s twin slaughters. And while Mayor Bloomberg tried his best to stay out of the inter-city rivalry, NJ Gov. Chris Christie made no secret of who he is rooting for: “J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets. Absolutely. Rex and the boys win by seven.” [ more › ]

Nanny Bloomberg Doesn’t Mind If Your Pants Hang Low

Your low hanging pants remain safe from government interference! A few years back, after a judge ruled it was not illegal to wear your pants low , Mayor Bloomberg came out to say “I don’t think the government should be in the business of telling people what they should wear.” Today on his weekly radio show hizzoner reiterated his semi-supportive stance on sub-groin slacks. Even nanny states have to draw the line somewhere! [ more › ]
