"Terrible" CT Police Chief Resigns, Others Want "I Might Have Tacos" Mayor Out, Too

With four police officers charged with violating the civil rights of Latino community members, through harassment, intimidation and physical violence, East Haven police chief Len Gallo has stepped down effective last Friday. The Courant reports that Mayor Joe Maturo, who famously said he “might have tacos” as a way to reach out to the Latino community, is forming a search committee for a replacement and called Gallo’s resignation an “unselfish act.” Well, is it really unselfish when Gallo is “an unnamed co-conspirator in last week’s federal indictment”? Really? Bloomberg Says Anti-Islam Film Flap Hurts NYPD’s "Credibility" With Muslims

Top cop Ray Kelly and his spokesman Paul Browne have been on the defensive all week after they were caught lying , or misremembering, the details of Kelly’s involvement in an Islamophobic propaganda film that was screened on a continuous loop for over 1,300 officers. Asked again about the controversy yesterday, Mayor Blooomberg told reporters , “Anything like this doesn’t help credibility. Ray’s got to work at establishing, or re-establishing, or reinforcing the credibility that he does have [with the Muslim community]. In other news, the NYPD has credibility with the Muslim community? Most Of Admiral’s Row To Be Torn Down Monday

For years we’ve been discussing the fate of the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s beloved 19th-century houses that make up Admiral’s Row . Our own Jake Dobkin even risked life and limb to get inside and document the houses in their beautiful decay , as the city talked of plans for leveling them. Despite protests to salvage the Row, it looks like its destiny is destruction, and this Monday nine of the eleven structures will be cleared, with two—the Timber Shed and Quarters B—being restored “for daily use,” according to the NY Times . These have now been “transferred by the federal government to the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, which manages the old 300-acre yard, now an industrial park of 275 businesses.” [ more › ]

Closed: Super-Exclusive Subway Sandwich Shop At WTC

After just two years , the Subway sandwich shop situated inside the under-construction 1 World Trade Center has closed. According to Crain’s , even though the lofty location had disappointing sales, “It wasn’t financial losses that shuttered the restaurant known for its $5 foot-long subs. The problem was strictly one of logistics. By design, 1 World Trade narrows as it rises, and the restaurant, which needs to be on a top floor to be near the workers, simply ran out of room as construction continued to the building’s current 90th floor high point.” [ more › ]

Video: Guy Fieri Eating In Reverse Is Surprisingly Entertaining

Some of us find grotesque and obnoxious food-related rich guy Guy Fieri unbearable to watch on the tee-vee, but Conan O’Brien discovered something very interesting last night: playing footage of Fieri backward has the opposite effect! As grating as Fieri is in normal footage, he’s conversely tolerable when he’s moving backward. Oh, the fun things you can do with video machines! Watch with the simple, easily-amused eyes of a child as Guy Fieri eats his food in reverse: [ more › ]

Happy Gossip Girl Day: What Other NYC Shows Have Been Given Their Own Days?

Guess the Mayor’s office isn’t a fan of the SVU spin-off. While we were told that they’re unsure when they started handing out this honor, “the City has issued proclamations to TV shows, movies and theatrical productions for many years.” And why not, if Yarn Bombing can be given a holiday, so can a show about rich, white, over-privileged Manhattanites.
