Cuomo Ends Fingerprinting Requirement For Food Stamps

Applying for food stamps in New York City is about to get a whole lot easier. Today Governor Cuomo announced he would end a finger imaging requirement for people applying for the Food Stamp Program in New York City. The proposal was filed today just five months after Governor Cuomo publicly declared his intentions to end the controversial program. The Governor released a statement today pointing to the policy’s “negative connotations, including the perceived implication of criminality” and the “impediment to employment and child care because parents may have to take time off from work” as basis for a change in policy. Adam "MCA" Yauch Honored On Floor Of New York State Senate

State Senator Daniel Squadron took to the Senate floor yesterday to introduce a resolution honoring Adam “MCA” Yauch , the beloved musician, rapper, Beastie Boys co-founder, filmmaker, Buddhist, and political activist. Yauch died of cancer ten days ago at a Manhattan hospital, and heartfelt tributes have gone up around NYC and beyond …and now all the way to the state legislature. Yauch was born and raised in Squadron’s Brooklyn district, and yesterday Squadron said, “It is with great sadness that we mourn Adam Yauch and honor his life and contributions to music, and his contributions to the world as an activist and organizer for good.” Here’s video: [ more › ]

Homeless Man Stabs Library Patron For Allegedly Looking At Porn

New Yorkers may have a constitutional right to look at porn in libraries, but that doesn’t mean your fellow patrons are just going to put up with it. A homeless man allegedly stabbed a 52-year-old man for perusing porn at the Brooklyn Heights Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library last night. “I’m innocent. My wife was there and he’s looking at porn,” suspect Ralph Neptune said as he was being arrested. [ more › ]

Man Spends $60,000—And Counting—In Custody Fight Over Puggle

Dog is man’s best friend, but is spending $60,000 in a custody fight over a dog too much—or too little? Craig Dershowitz is trying to get a puggle named Knuckles back from his ex-girlfriend, claiming that she kidnapped him when they broke up. Dershowitz has turned to a website to raise money for legal fees and says , “My ex has a wealthy family that is backing her. I do not. I am paying for this out of my own savings while also helping my mom through her medical issues. My ex is filing motion after frivolous motion just knowing that each time my lawyer responds it takes me one step closer to having nothing at all.
