You Might Pay 20% More For A Cab Ride Very Soon

Remember when TLC Commissioner David Yassky told us in March that a fare increase was “not on our agenda?” What a difference 76 days makes, because today Yassky indicated that fares may go up by as much as 16% to 20% this summer. “The fare hasn’t changed since 2006, so it is reasonable for taxi drivers and fleet owners to put this on the table,” he tells the Daily News. Woah, if Yassky keeps it up he might just earn himself the title of Deputy Commissioner of Public Information for the NYPD. [ more › ]

Google Gives Cornell Rent-Free NYC Space For 5 Years

Back when Cornell’s bid to bring a high-tech campus to Roosevelt Island was approved by the City the school said that it’d be holding classes in the city (if not on Roosevelt Island) ASAP. And thanks to a very generous gift from Google, that really will happen. Despite its longstanding ties to Stanford, internet behemoth Google today announced it is giving the school 22,000-square-feet of space on an upper floor of its NYC headquarters, rent free, for the next five-and-a-half years. Ultra-Orthodox Internet Rally Bans Press, Organizers Cite "Homeland Security"

Some 40,000 ultra-Orthodox Jews packed Citi Field last night (with another 20,000 overflowing into Arthur Ashe stadium) for a huge rally warning about the evils of the Internet. If you’re curious about what went on inside, look no further than the Internet, where the Twitter hastag #Asifa yields a slew of live updates from the rally. Organizers had futilely tried to keep the sold-out event private, to no avail. Josh Nathan-Kazis at the Forward was told that reporters would not be permitted inside because of Homeland Security.               Early this morning, there was a two car accident in Brooklyn—and we happened to be on the scene when it occurred. The incident occurred just after 4 a.m. today at the intersection of Rogers Avenue and Union Street in Crown Heights. UWS Dad Jumps Onto Subway Tracks To Save Woman

While you were sipping your third mimosa and complaining about the subpar battery life on your cellular phone, Greg Wetzel was saving a woman’s life. Wetzel, a 40-year-old father of three, was standing with his children at the West 72nd Street subway station at 12:45 yesterday afternoon when he saw something out of the corner of his eye: a woman had fallen unconscious onto the tracks. He immediately jumped down and lifted her to safety. “He didn’t hesitate,” a witness told the Daily News. “The guy was really amazing. This guy was like a real hero.” [ more › ]
