The City Council is expected to pass a sunshine bill today that would create an advisory committee to oversee banks that do business with the city. The Responsible Banking Act would require such banks to submit detailed records to the NYC Department of Finance Commissioner, showing how they operate citywide, with a special focus on poor neighborhoods. This information would be made public on the Department of Finance website, and city officials could use it to pressure banks to improve services. Naturally, our billionaire mayor hates it. McHale’s, a watering hole that served one hell of a burger on 46th and Eighth closed in early 2006 , but now Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York has a very interesting rumor about it. The city has allocated $1.6 million to fund the revamped Civilian Complaint Review Board, which has traditionally been a toothless, opaque system that was easily dismissed by the NYPD, but will now have the power to prosecute police officers accused of wrongdoing. According to the Wall Street Journal, the board’s Administrative Prosecution Unit will include a chief, a deputy, ten prosecutors, and five investigators, and the funding will kick in on July 1.
