Luis “Baby” Ortiz, who is accused of shooting NYPD officer Kevin Brennan in the head Tuesday night at the Bushwick Houses, showed no remorse as he was escorted out of the 90th Precinct station house yesterday afternoon. “Yeah, take a picture of me,” Ortiz, 21, told photographers during the perp walk as he smiled, blew kisses to family and friends, and mugged for the cameras. In Spanish, he yelled “I love the Latin Kings,” adding, “You know what it is,” according to the Daily News . His angry supporters also showed little remorse. [ more › ]

With four police officers charged with violating the civil rights of Latino community members, through harassment, intimidation and physical violence, East Haven police chief Len Gallo has stepped down effective last Friday. Queens Man Killed By Explosive May Have Committed Suicide

Police are investigating whether 50-year-old Theodore Ellinghaus Jr. intentionally set the large firecracker that killed him yesterday, or was fatally wounded by accident. The Post reports that Ellinghaus, who lived with his father in Ozone Park, Queens, lit an M80 firecracker and held it against his body. The device was so powerful it “tore a hole through his stomach, leaving his organs exposed.” Ellinghaus’ father, Theodore Sr., told he paper he doesn’t believe his son would committ suicide. “It was an accident. It went off. He wouldn’t kill himself. He told me he wouldn’t kill himself.” [ more › ]

Family Of 12-Year-Old Killed On Delancey Raising Money For Funeral

The grandmother of 12-year-old Dashane Santana, who was struck and killed by a car crossing Delancey Street last week, is in the midst of raising the $8,500 for Dashane’s funeral while she grieves for her granddaughter. “Right now we need about $3,000 by Tuesday,” Teresa Pedroza tells us. “It’s coming in little by little.” Pedroza has sold candy and gone door-to-door asking for donations, which yielded around $600. She hopes that two fundraisers she’s organizing, one today and another tomorrow, will be enough. “All this is out of the blue. Her birthday is in February—we’re supposed to be celebrating that.
