A 65-year-old man has filed a religious discrimination lawsuit against his former Jewish organization employers, alleging his supervisor micromanaged how, where, and when he prayed. Marshall Garvin, an observant Jew from Riverdale, says that when he complained to Na’amat USA President Elizabeth Raider about supervisor Susan Schwartz, he was swiftly dismissed. “No person of any religion should have to go through this. Most notably, the People’s Library has only retrieved 1,099 books out of the total collection of about 4,000, and only 800 are still usable. At noon today, civil rights attorney Norman Siegel will join the president of the NYC Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild Gideon Oliver and members of the People’s Library for a press conference at 260 Madison Ave. to address the city for destroying or losing thousands of books. Last month, 24 Occupy Wall Street demonstrators were arrested after they marched to the Citibank at 555 LaGuardia in a mass attempt to close their accounts . They were all charged with criminal trespass, but two protesters, Heather Carpenter and fiance Julio Jose Jiminez-Artunduaga, were also charged with resisting arrest—and now they are both suing the city for false arrest and excessive force. Journalists widely reported being kept from last week’s NYPD raid of Zuccotti Park. 10 reporters have been arrested in New York since the protests began, and several have claimed that they were injured by NYPD officers while on the job. In response, New York Times Company Vice President and Assistant General Counsel George Freeman has written a letter to NYPD spokesman Paul Browne condemning the actions of the police and requesting an “immediate meeting” with Browne and Commissioner Ray Kelly.
