Paranoid Queens Bus Shooter Allegedly Intended For Bloodbath

The paranoid ex-con who fatally shot his girlfriend’s teenage son, then killed one person and injured another on a Q111 NYC Transit bus in Queens was allegedly hoping for a bloodbath. Damel Burton, 34, told cops the bus shooting occurred because he believed the commuters were plotting against him . And prosecutors say he had been planning to shoot even more people: “The defendant stated that he would have shot more people but the gun jammed,” prosecutor Suzanne O’Hare said at Burton’s arraignment, according to the News. Governors Island Castaway Cat Named Molly Brown
Governors Island Castaway Cat Named Molly Brown

The cat that washed up on Governors Island shore last month has been named. And she is Molly Brown, after the Unsinkable Molly Brown! According to the Governors Island Blog : It seems the most popular name was Molly Brown, for the “Unsinkable” Molly Brown, who became famous after travelling on the Titanic‘s ill fated journey. After boarding lifeboat #6 once the Titanic struck ice, Molly helped row the boat with other women for hours and looked for survivors in the surrounding waters. She assisted those who had lost everything in the tragedy and raised funds to assist survivors as they started a new life after losing so much. Other names suggested were Mary Ann or Ginger, Salty, and Buttermilk (for the channel). [ more › ]

Newsflash: Baghdad Has Better Roads Than Queens
Newsflash: Baghdad Has Better Roads Than Queens

Remember this guy? He’s the Council member who made headlines with his idea to make cyclists get licenses. (At the time, he told us , “The people on bicycles brought this on themselves by behaving this way.”) Our favorite young Republican, Eric Ulrich, is back with more insights into the city’s transportation system. This time his ire aimed at the DOT for planning more pedestrian plazas , which Ulrich says shouldn’t be built until every street in NYC (or at least his district in Queens) is in mint condition. Better Know A NYC Emergency Medical Technician!
Better Know A NYC Emergency Medical Technician!

Outside of the re-posts of ephemeral Internet regurgitation, Reddit truly is chockfull of great content! And some of the best of that content can be found in the AMA/IAmA section, where everyone from Stephen Colbert to Anthony Weiner to someone who was horrifically abused by their mother will take questions about their lives. Yesterday, a three-year NYC Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) veteran took questions , offered anecdotes, and gave insights into his fast-paced job (he offered photographic proof as well). Some highlights of the conversation below: [ more › ]

Smokers’ Rights Advocate Scoffs At Big Bootleg Cigarette Bust

A crackdown on underground cigarette dealing spearheaded by the Queens D.A.’s office has resulted in 12 arrests and the seizure of over 4,000 cartons of bootlegged cigarettes. At a press conference yesterday, D.A. Richard Brown stood behind a mountain of cigarette cartons which have been seized over the past three months; the smokes were smuggled into New York from overseas and out of state, and included the seizure of 22,000 untaxed cigars and nearly $400,000 in money and property. Heh, looks like investigators really smoked out these smugglers. Brown said the defendants cost NYC and the state $270,000 in tax revenue. [ more › ]

Queens Museum Breaks Ground On Massive Expansion
Queens Museum Breaks Ground On Massive Expansion

Today the Queens Museum of Art broke ground on a $65 million, 50,000 square foot expansion into the old World’s Fair Skating Rink, a project that will double the museum’s size by 2013. The new space will include galleries, a cafe, a museum store, classrooms and public events spaces, but their main goal is making sure people know the museum exists. Queens Museum Executive Director Tom Finkelpearl told NY1 , “A lot of people grew up in Queens, they don’t know where we are. We’re clearing the trees away—moving the trees away. There’s going to be a 220 foot long work of art on that side of the building facing the Grand Central, so you will know where the Queens Museum is.” Sorry trees, but in this day and age there’s just no other way to publicize things.
