And that’s if the flight isn’t delayed or cancelled. Now, the gross noroviruses that have been known to ruin grandma’s cruises have been plaguing airlines, including several successive Air New Zealand flights. In case you had forgotten that NYPD Officer Peter Figoski gave his life fighting crime in Brooklyn, the NYPD today slips a story to the Post about the police partially stopping a similar drug dealer robbery in which the alleged crooks were reportedly ready to kill cops if necessary. “It’s similar to the Figoski case,” a source tells the tabloid. Murdered Grad Student Annie Le’s Family Sues Yale

The family of the Yale graduate student who was killed by a lab technician has filed a lawsuit against the school , accusing the Ivy League institution of failing to protect women. A statement released lawyer Joseph Tacopina said that Yale had “long taken inadequate steps to ensure the safety and security of women on its campus. Yale’s persistent tolerance of sexual harassment and sexual assaults on campus caused students to file a Title IX Complaint against Yale University. And, just five days before she was to be married, Annie Le was a victim of that environment.” [ more › ]

Innocent Bystander Killed In Crown Heights Feared For Safety

An innocent bystander who was shot and killed on her stoop in Crown Heights feared gun violence at the West Indian Day parade. 56-year-old Denise Gay was shot in the head by a stray bullet fired by gunman Leroy Webster, who also shot and killed Eusi Johnson after a dispute. Webster, who also shot two police officers in a massive firefight on Franklin Avenue at Park Place, remains in critical condition, and did not die as was originally reported. “She was afraid to go outside because of the parade,” Gay’s sister tells the Daily News, “Denise was always worried about gun violence.” Gay reportedly collapsed into her daughter’s arms after being shot. “She thought her mother tripped. Her mother died in her arms,” Gay’s sister said. [ more › ]

If the President wants to send you a text, you’ll be required to receive it on your smart phone under a new emergency alert system that the FCC and FEMA are rolling out in NYC and D.C. by the end of the year. Announced today , the new Personal Localized Alerting Network [PLAN] lets customers who own an enabled mobile device “receive geographically-targeted, text-like messages alerting them of imminent threats to safety in their area.” If you don’t want The Man telling you there’s an imminent threat to your safety, you can opt out of a second tier of alerts, such as warnings about less catastrophic natural disasters or AMBER Alerts. But the messages from Obama are going to be shoved down your cell phone’s throat, just like health care ! [ more › ]

Last week, a senior died in a workshop at a Yale University chemistry building. Michele Dufault, who was working on her senior project, had been using a lathe late at night when her hair got caught and died of “asphyxia due to neck compression.” The school has launched an investigation and review into its safety practices as some wonder whether Yale students should be allowed 24-hour access to shops and whether they should be working without supervision. Rent, Don’t Buy: Off-Beat Hotels Make Tempting Cases For Temporary Insanity

Click here to view the full photogallery. Way back in September, we took a peek at a Costa Rican hotel that stuck a retired 727 airliner in the treetops as a VIP suite. Well it turns out Costa Rica isn’t the only country home to some wacky vacation getaways. From Connecticut to Belgium, we’ve found five more hotels and hostels with exotic accommodations sure to make bedding down part of the fun. While they might not share in the superhero cachet of Taiwan’s Eden hotel, these picks also don’t rent out by the hour, making them a far less scandalous alternative. In fact, should some scandal erupt, the Mirrorcube at Sweden’s Treehotel (above) would make the perfect place to hide from the world. Supported by a single tree trunk, the 173-square-foot cabin is fronted on all sides with mirrored glass. Concerned for the safety of local wildlife, the Swedish architecture firm Tham & Videgård Arkitekter had the glass panels lined with an infrared film visible only to avian eyes. ↑ If that 727 down in Costa Rica wasn’t quite big enough to satisfy gimmick-minded guests, this repurposed Boeing 747 jumbo jet on the tarmac of Stockholm’s Arlanda airport should do the trick. Known as JumboStay, the hostel offers a range of accommodations, from four person shared dormitory rooms in “coach” to the honeymoon suite nestled in the upstairs cockpit. Prices are reasonable too, but, given the location amidst a steady stream of still-functional (read: loud) aircraft, that’s none too surprising. Also a honeymoon suite with double beds? The hotelier behind Winvian commissioned 15 different architects to design the 18 guest cottages on the property. Most of these have some traditional New England feel, but one architect went off his or her rocker, choosing to stick a former Coast Guard helicopter inside a barn and convert it for nightly use. The interior of the whirly bird contains a seating area, television, stainless steel bar and a restored cockpit for imaginary flights of fancy. Thankfully, the mattress isn’t crammed inside the ‘copter but rests in an alcove opposite a jacuzzi tub. This might be a novelty but the price sure isn’t, starting at $950 per night. The Martello Tower, one of several such towers built to defend against a potential invasion by Napoleon, is now managed by the Landmark Trust as a shared boarding house. While we’re all for preservation and enjoy the unique advantages of historic accommodations, we would have a hard time selling renters on the narrow gun-port windows when such beautiful coastal vistas are just on the other side. Thankfully, there’s a roof from which to enjoy the views in good weather, but there are more worries to be had, like the lack of floor-to-ceiling walls making for very public private spaces. ↑ Ever wanted to live like you were about to invade Troy? Well now you can at Belgium’s La Balade des Gnomes where the proprietors have constructed a full-scale—if none-too-historically accurate—replica of the Trojan Horse, replete with slap-dash wooden construction and wheels. There’s space for two inside, and thankfully a few windows, which we’re guessing were not on the original. If so, those Trojans had it coming. Workers Allegedly Lacked Safety Equipment Before Fall

Construction workers Brett McEnroe and Roy Powell were killed yesterday after falling 65 feet from the seventh floor of an Upper West Side building they were working on, and Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri says , “We have no evidence in detail that gives us assurance that there were safety measures in place.” A stop work order now exists on the property, and the latest complaint cites , “INADEQUATE GUARDRAIL SYSTEM PROVIDED @ SHAFT NW CORNER ROOF, 3&4 FLRS STOP ALL WORK ON ENTIRE SITE COMPLY VIO CONDITIONS.” [ more › ]
