The Long Island teen whose story of academic excellence while her family fell into homelessness was back in the news yesterday—Suffolk County officials presented Samantha Garvey , her parents and two siblings with keys to a new house! The home, which is being rented to low-income families by Suffolk County, has three bedrooms and was offered to the Garveys after Samantha’s story was featured on the front page of Newsday. The Brentwood High School senior said , “I was homeless, and I didn’t have a house, and because of the kindness of all these strangers, I do—I have a house! I couldn’t have gotten here without education—you make the best of it because it’s the end to so many things.” [ more › ]

Another NJ Teacher Accused Of Sleeping With A Student

Another week, another Bergen County, New Jersey teacher accused of sleeping with a student . Lyndhurst High School football coach and phys. ed. teacher Scott Rubinetti was arrested yesterday and charged with sexual assault, child endangerment and witness tampering. Police say that between 2009 and 2010 he had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a senior girl in his charge. [ more › ]

A history teacher in New Jersey was arrested yesterday morning and accused of carrying on a months-long inappropriate relationship with a former student, a 16-year-old at Passaic Valley High School where he worked. 32-year-old Kyle Daniw was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. “There is no evidence other than this child, but we are investigating whether there are other victims,” Chief Assistant Prosecutor Joseph A. Last fall, officials investigated allegations that a Bronx high school principal had repeatedly harassed teachers by talking about his penis. Department of Education officials confirmed that Principal John Chase Jr. of Bronxdale High School made at least three remarks about oral sex to female staffers. But he was only disciplined with a letter of reprimand and sensitivity training. And now, fellow teachers and city officials are outraged that he still has his job: “The fact that he’s not being fired is insane,” one teacher told the News . “People are very uncomfortable around this guy. A caterer on Staten Island, who allegedly has ties to the Genovese crime family, was found guilty of threatening a rival for a high school cafeteria bid. U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch said , “This case demonstrates organized crime still conducts its business in its traditional way — by relying on threats and violence to intimidate hard-working individuals trying to make a legitimate living. Here, the defendant sought to use fear and intimidation to obtain business, rather than honest competition. Such efforts will always be met with the full force of the law.” [ more › ]

A plainclothed Brooklyn cop was badly injured when he was pinned between cars during a routine traffic stop yesterday. According to the Post , the unidentified detective had pulled over a black vehicle in Flatbush with four men inside; he was standing behind the car when a white van rammed into him, crushing his legs and sending blood everywhere. “When they pulled him out of the car, his legs were hanging, dangling, it was terrible, there was blood everywhere,” said one witness.
