Workers are struggling to save an old Staten Island ferry that’s sinking 60 miles north of New York in the Hudson River. The Herbert H. Lehman, named after the former New York Governor and United States Senator , was decommissioned in 2007 after four decades of service. The ferry began taking on water last week and is now listing to starboard at the end of a pier near Newburgh, NY. Divers inspected the sunken portion on Monday and determined it was resting on the river bottom. [ more › ]

The Federal Bureau of Investigation may investigate claims that Republican Congressman from Staten Island Michael Grimm received illegal cash donations from the followers of Rabbi Yoshiyahu Tosef Pinto. An FBI official told the Wall Street Journal that the bureau is “gathering information” on the allegations, first reported in the New York Times but apparently noted by former Congressman Anthony Weiner, who said he informed the FBI of possible illegal activity in 2010. Tipsy Lady Sues City After Cops Hospitalize Her Against Her Will

A Staten Island woman says the NYPD wrongly forced her to go to the hospital while she was waiting for the ferry after a night of drinking in Manhattan. On December 8th last year, just before midnight, Chloe Sowers was sitting on the floor of the Lower Manhattan terminal drinking a coconut water and waiting for the boat to take her home. She was sitting on the floor because no seats were available, but this caught the eye of one Officer Kevin McKeon, who was so “concerned” about Sowers that she ended up handcuffed and taken to New York Downtown Hospital, where she was bound and drugged for the night against her will. Rep. Grimm Dismisses Sketchy Donation Allegations: "I’ve Had People Try To Kill Me"

After reports that he strong-armed $500K in mystical donations from the followers of Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, Staten Island Congressman Michael Grimm has had to distance himself from his duties as a Mitt Romney surrogate. But yesterday he told supporters that this whole “impropriety” stink isn’t so bad, compared to his other gigs as a Marine and FBI agent. “I’ve had people try to kill me. I’m going to dust myself off and I’m going to keep fighting for the people of Staten Island and Brooklyn.” [ more › ]

Roll-Your-Own Cigarette Shop Crackdown Continues With 2 More Stores Sued

The city’s Law Department has filed two more lawsuits against stores that exploit a perceived loophole in the city’s obscene cigarette tax law. You’ll recall that New York Smokes, a retail tobacco outlet on Staten Island, was making bank selling customers loose tobacco, which is taxed at a far lower rate than cigarettes. Customers would then roll their own smokes in the store using cigarette stuffing machines, walking out with a pack for about $6—far less than the average $13 price. But then the city cracked down on that enterprise, and now the guv’ment is going after two more shops. [ more › ]

Bloomberg’s Idea For A Perfect First Date? The Staten Island Ferry

First dates are tough: you don’t want the person to know that you actually spend all your time in the same dingy dive, but no matter what super scientific online dating surveys say, dropping $100 on dinner reeks of trying too hard. Museums show you’re cultured, but all the line-waiting and pretending to know about Kandinsky can get tiring. Movies: staid and boring (you’re both just sitting in the dark!), and concerts are fine if you don’t mind shouting over the bass. So what does New York City’s Bachelor-in-Chief think is the “best spot in NYC” for a first date? “The Staten Island Ferry!” In January? Poor Diana. [ more › ]
