Reckless Restaurant Delivery Guys Cost UES Eatery A Liquor License

The State Liquor Authority has taken the rare step of denying a liquor license to a Chinese restaurant on Second Avenue near East 91st Street because of the reckless conduct of its delivery men. Vicky’s Cottage wanted to add wine and beer to its menu, but after local residents complained to Community Board 8 about its employees roaring around on electric bikes and riding on the sidewalk, the CB voted not to recommend a liquor license, and the SLA brought the hammer down. City Hall Still Pondering Privatizing Parking Meters

A little more than a year after it came up the last time , the city is again publicly mulling the idea of privatizing its parking meters. As the Wall Street Journal reports , nothing has been decided on, and the idea is still in the very early stages, but it is something that is definitely being talked about. On the plus side, City Hall seems aware of trying to not make the same very costly mistakes Chicago has. [ more › ]

Curbed Comparisons: What You Get For $15M Around the Curbed Universe
Curbed Comparisons: What You Get For $15M Around the Curbed Universe

Welcome to Curbed Comparisons, a column that explores what set dollar amounts buy in the ever-growing list of cities that comprises the Curbed universe. Is one man’s studio another man’s townhouse? Let’s find out! Click here to view the full photogallery. Spending $15M on a place to live is a tall order for all but a select few, but in some of America’s most expensive cities, even that sum can’t buy enough bedrooms to go around. This glassy duplex penthouse in NYC’s Chelsea neighborhood certainly has that “wow” factor, with lofty double-height ceilings, a 1,200-square-foot roof deck, and 3,600 square feet of interiors by designer Christian Damerow. Now for the bad news. Despite costing a whopping $15.2M, this swanky apartment has but one bedroom, and even that doesn’t quite qualify, as its wall of glass opens to the interior. Downstairs, there’s a “guest bed/study,” but that space isn’t even enclosed. That leaves this visually-appealing multimillion-dollar home fit for a (very rich) bachelor or bachelorette. Click here to view the full photogallery. ↑ In the suburbs of San Francisco—Los Gatos to be exact—that $15M goes much further. This custom-built, five-bedroom, six-bath mansion was constructed in 2000 on a lot purchased two years earlier for $1.3M. If the owners get their $15M asking price, that would make for quite a profit, but this is quite the suburban residence, with two acres of formal landscaping, an elegant swimming pool, an outdoor kitchen, and inoffensive, if rather staid, interiors. Click here to view the full photogallery. ↑ This New England-style estate looks like it might be at home in the Connecticut countryside, but it actually sits not far from the Pacific, in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. Listed for $14.95M, the 11,500-square-foot manse has seven bedrooms and an astonishing 17 total bathrooms. Highlights include a covered rear patio, a swimming pool set back across a broad lawn, and some killer hardwood parquet floors. Click here to view the full photogallery. ↑ Set behind elegant iron gates in the Boston suburb of Lawrence, a formerly down-on-its-luck town set for a revival, this massive brick mansion is currently operated as some sort of health clinic. The owners, recognizing the town’s improving fortunes, are seeking to cash in by selling it as a single-family home, for $16M. The 22,000-square-foot, 20-bedroom manse comes with 217 acres of rolling hills and forest, but the interiors are showing their age and could use some TLC, which, in a home this large, means spending millions more. They should be worth saving, considering they were designed by Guy Lowell, the man responsible for Boston’s imposing Museum of Fine Art. Click here to view the full photogallery. ↑ Annapolis, the capital of Maryland and a bedroom community for D.C., has been luring urbanites into quaint bayside living for years, but there’s nothing quaint about the prices in this nautically-obsessed town. This over-the-top manse, sited on 6.4 acres of waterfront property, is listed for $15M, despite its obvious aesthetic shortcomings. The 12,000-square-foot main house, with six bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms, is joined on the property by a two-bed guest house, a pair of boat barns, and a private pier nearly 200 feet long. It’s all listed for precisely $15M, but has had some trouble attracting buyers: it’s been on the market for the better part of a year. · 126 West 22nd Street [Nestseekers via Streeteasy ] · 15671 Glen Una Dr [Zillow] · 668 Chautauqua Blvd [Zillow] · Lancaster MA [Zillow] · 1234 Cherry Tree Lane [Zillow]

Twitter Defends Protester From Manhattan DA’s Subpoena

After a Manhattan judge denied Occupy Wall Street protester Malcolm Harris’ motion to quash a subpoena for his (innocuous) tweets, Twitter has filed their own motion to quash the Manhattan DA’s subpoena. “Twitter’s Terms of Service make absolutely clear that its users own their content,” the company’s attorneys write. “Unlike bank records, the content that Twitter users create and submit to Twitter are clearly a form of electronic communication that, accordingly, implicates First Amendment protections.” [ more › ]

The TSA communications department has really been hustling lately, sending out a flurry of press releases with photos and stories about all the potentially dangerous things stupid people try to sneak onto flights. Fruits of the TSA’s recent security theater include: land mine casings (filled with shrapnel, but no explosives), three stuffed animals with gun parts inside, a trio of dainty yet deadly throwing knives, and a pepper spray canister gun with a sparkly silver trigger (WANT!). Click through on the photos for the TSA’s stories about their recent scores. [ more › ]

House of the Day: A Classic California Post and Beam in Immaculate Condition

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We’d love to see what you’ve got. Click here to view the full photogallery. Location: Pacific Palisades, Calif. Price: $1,560,000 The Skinny: Of the many post-war wood-and-glass homes in Southern California, few have been as well preserved and updated as this Pollack & Kahn creation in Pacific Palisades. Built in 1955, the house seems to hover above the street, as the living space protrudes out over the carport. Inside, there’s plenty of period-accurate midcentury furniture and the kitchen has been left largely intact, but with the addition of a modern cooktop. Outside, a pair of architectural chimneys anchor a dining patio enshrouded in landscaping. This one certainly isn’t for the Louis XIV types, but would be perfect for a couple looking for the quintessential midcentury home, provided they’ve got the budget to cover a $1.56M price tag. · 1300 Monument Street [Crosby Doe]

NYPD Detained Protester On May Day In Case Of Mistaken Identity

Last week we learned that the NYPD and the FBI attempted to glean information on the May Day protests by executing bench warrants on people they believed were involved with planning Occupy Wall Street demonstrations and interrogating them. One of those people, who goes by the pseudonym Shawn Carrié, spoke to WNYC about how he was detained by the NYPD on May Day for over 13 hours on a warrant for a public urination charge that didn’t belong to him.
