Medical marijuana is on the agenda in Albany once again, with a State Senator working hard to corral Republicans for a soon-to-be-introduced bill. But according to the Wall Street Journal , this time could be different, because the same political landscape that saw same-sex marriage pass could finally allow sick people to legally smoke grass, like they do in 16 other states. A reminder that Curbed’s first-ever Rookie Roosts week—in which the murky, oft-terrifying world of first-time homebuying will be explored ad infinitum across the network—kicks off today. On the local blogs, that means: chocked-full maps and guides for first-time buyers, neighborhood tips and advice, and reports from the front lines of buying property for the first time. Here on Curbed National, look for starter homes for the House of the Day and, starting Thursday, a nationwide contest to find the worst first-time homebuying experience out there. Which means now’s the time to send in those horror stories—think auction purchases gone awry, back taxes backlash, shady home inspectors, and brokers with a Pinocchio-like sense of the truth—for a chance to wine a $2,500 gift card to the home store of your choice. Taxi TV is ear-shattering enough but at least there’s an easily accessible “off” button. Sometimes, however, your driver may provide the entertainment. As part of the Taxicab Rider Bill of Rights , passengers have a right to control the volume of music—it states you have the right to “a noise free trip: no horn honking or radio.” But, you know, it happens… and sometimes (like when alcohol is involved, mostly) it can even be sort of fun to whip through the city streets with a stranger behind the wheel while the music is turned up to 11. But not all the time. One man took this below video from the back seat of a cab this week to document the volume of the music the cab driver was playing—turns out you can go past 11 on the volume control! [ more › ]

The unseasonably warm weather we’ve been having this winter has really messed things up , and now it may ruin the annual Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival at Brooklyn Botanic garden… again . You’ve probably been spotting the trees blossoming around the city already, and things are no different at the BBG, where their map shows 11 trees currently at “first bloom,” and a couple more at “peak bloom” (there are over 200 on their grounds). What does this mean for the festival, held on April 28th and 29th? Many will be past their prime by the time it rolls around. [ more › ]

First Lady Michelle Obama was on the Late Show with David Letterman and discussed a number of topics, from her father’s struggle with MS to Bo, the adorable First Dog. Letterman pressed her about private chats with the President as well, “Now, you don’t have to answer this question, but this is the thing that I was thinking about. I have conversations with my wife. Paul has conversations with his wife. Married men and women have conversations all the time… Hypothetically speaking, at the end of the day, has your husband ever come home and said to you, ‘Oh, that John Boehner — what an idiot’?” [ more › ]
