Traffic, Part III

To anyone who thinks I am exaggerating how not good it’s getting at 31st and Astoria Blvd…
here’s my corner Friday night at 5pm. And my corner is one enlarged block north of said intersection:

So there’s a typical Friday night on my corner. And it leads us to our moment point about the problems of that intersection…
It’s the only real, non-blocks-out-of-your-way out of the “Ditmars” corridor (defined as the, for lack of a better term, “business district” surrounding Ditmars and 31st.). 31st Street is it. The next place you can cross the Parkway east of there is at 37th Street. And best of luck crossing that one in less than four lights now that it’s a two-way bridge again. To the west you can get TO the parkway (and bridge entrance) via 29th (you saw how well that would go) but to go under the parkway

you have to go to 27th Street. thereupon that street dead-ends at, you guessed it, Astoria Blvd!

So every car and truck leaving the many many stores at Ditmars are going down 31st Street. And running into a brick wall at the highway. So we’ve now covered heading west on the GCP/Astoria Blvd and south from 31st Street. Next date we will visit the eastern travelers via the bridge and the boulevard. Should be fun. Perhaps more crude drawings to follow too.
